Real Client Results
Lauren came to me at the end of June with concerns of pretty severe case of Keratosis Pilaris that had been diagnosed by a dermatologist. Keratosis Pilaris is a common skin condition, which appears as tiny bumps on the skin. These rough-feeling bumps are actually plugs of dead skin cells. After a through skincare consultation, I was able to see that although KP was present, the real issue was the comedonal acne and acute rosacea. Closed comedones are whiteheads, where the follicle is completely blocked.
Lauren's Protocol; Phase one- Restoring Skin Health
Every skincare regimen I recommend starts with 3 basic steps; Cleanse, Exfoliate & Tone. I swear to God these will be the last three words that come out of my mouth on my death bed haha! These three steps are known as the Getting Skin Ready protocol coined by the skincare supreme leader Dr. Zein Obagi. You can check out my previous blog post about the Getting Skin Ready clinical trial by clicking here. The results are INSANE. It's truly amazing of how much of a difference the very basics of skincare can restore the skin to function correctly.
Treating acne is a balancing act. When treating acne we are working on evening out sebum (oil) production and reducing inflammation, all while treating and preventing breakouts. and in some cases, scaring & inflammatory hyperpigmentation. It's a lot. In Lauren's case, I wanted restore her skin barrier before we pulled out any big guns. I started her on the ZO® SKIN HEALTH ACNE PREVENTION AND TREATMENT PROGRAM and HYDRATING CRÈME.
Gasp! Hydrating cream on someone who is acne prone?!? Sounds counterproductive to treat someone with oily skin with a moisturizer right? Like I said, treating acne is a balancing act, and the Hydrating Creme works wonders on rosacea and eczema, and restoring skin barrier function. Restoring the skin barrier was our whole goal for this first phase of treatment.
What is the ZO® SKIN HEALTH ACNE PREVENTION Program
A complete line of highly effective products formulated to treat clogged pores, blackheads/whiteheads (comedones), papules and pustules (pimples) and cysts. Included in the kit is:
Exfoliating Cleanser – Gentle exfoliating cleanser for normal to oily skin that targets surface oil leaving the skin feeling clean, but not stripped and dry. Exfoliating Polish – Magnesium crystals exfoliate dead skin cells to create a clear, smooth and even toned complexion. Complexion Renewal Pads – Moistened pads help minimize surface oil and exfoliate pore-clogging dead skin cells and dirt. Sulfur Masque – Natural, clay-based formula that treats and prevents acne. Formula purifies pores and absorbs excess oil that can lead to future breakouts, while hydrating the skin to combat dryness.
As you can see in the photos above, it's a pretty amazing transformation in only 8 weeks. These results were achieved because Lauren was diligent and compliant with her regimen. My job of recommending products only goes so far, and the rest was up to her with committing fully to using her prescribed treatment plan and having the patience for the products to do their job.
Another key factor in her timely results is Lauren's extensive knowledge of her diet and lifestyle, and how those factors play a role in her overall skin health. How you ask? Well, Lauren is a health and wellness coach, and has done her own research in to how her own body reacts to certain foods. Before she came to see me she had already assessed that certain food groups such as gluten, dairy or sugar does not impact her skin-like most people. Contrary to what the internet and some skin influencers preach, MOST people can enjoy foods from various food groups without having any impact on his or her skin.
